How to Use the Turf-Rebate Kit — Utah Edition

Site Prep

Remove all existing bluegrass or turf completely. Utah soils are typically alkaline and may be heavily compacted from years of sod.

Till 2–3 inches, break surface crust, and add compost if soils are dense clay. The Wasatch Front has some of the most challenging soils for establishment — do not skip the soil prep step.

Seeding

Broadcast seed at 8 lb per 1,000 sq ft. The higher seeding rate accounts for Utah's challenging clay soils and variable germination conditions. Rake lightly for 1/4-inch seed-to-soil contact. Straw mulch is recommended in exposed Utah sites where afternoon winds are common.

Establishment

Water twice daily for 2–3 weeks after seeding. Utah's low humidity and high-altitude UV intensity mean soil moisture evaporates quickly — consistent watering during germination is critical.

Does Buffalograss survive Utah winters?
Yes. Buffalograss is cold-hardy to approximately -30°F (Zone 4), well below what Utah valley communities experience. Salt Lake City sits in Zone 6b, Provo in Zone 6a, and Ogden in Zone 5b — all within comfortable range for Buffalograss. It goes dormant in winter and returns in spring.
