Prepare the Site
Pick a sunny spot and clear away weeds and existing grass. Loosen the top inch or two of soil so seed makes good contact. A clean, weed-free bed is the single biggest factor in a strong cutting stand.
Sow the Seeds
Mix the seed with a little dry sand to help spread it evenly, then scatter over the prepared bed at about 1 lb per 2,000 sq ft. Sow at the right time for this mix (see the FAQ above).
Press, Don’t Bury
These seeds need light to germinate. Rake lightly or press the seed into the surface for good soil contact, but don’t cover them deeply — no more than 1/8 inch.
Water, Establish, Wait
Water regularly through the first year while the perennials root in. Expect mostly foliage the first season; strong cutting-quality bloom arrives in year two and returns bigger every year after.
Questions & Answers
Sow in spring after the soil warms, or in fall so the seed gets natural cold over winter — many of these perennials germinate better after a cold period. Across much of the country, fall sowing gives the strongest stand.
We recommend about 1 lb per 2,000 sq ft. The 0.5 lb size covers about 1,000 sq ft, 1 lb covers about 2,000 sq ft, and 5 lb covers about 10,000 sq ft.
Here is the honest part: perennials spend their first year building roots and foliage, with little or no cutting-quality bloom. The payoff comes in year two and beyond, when the planting returns bigger and fuller every season — plant once, cut for years.
Plant in full sun to light shade in average, well-drained soil. Once established these perennials are low-to-moderate water and quite drought-tolerant. Water regularly through the first season while they establish, then only during dry spells.
Yes — that is the point. These are hardy perennials that return and spread over time. Cut them back or leave the seed heads for birds in winter; many will also self-sow and thicken the planting.
Good news — yes. Every flower in this perennial mix is non-toxic and pollinator-friendly, which makes it a worry-free choice if you keep pets or grazing livestock. As with any ornamental, we don’t recommend eating the flowers, but nothing here is poisonous.
