Kill or remove existing turf completely — solarize with clear plastic for 6–8 weeks before seeding, or use a non-selective herbicide and wait the label-required interval. Scalp the area to bare soil.

Rake lightly to break up surface crust. In very sandy soils, a light topdress of native compost (1/4 inch) can improve seedbed moisture retention.

Broadcast seed at 3–4 lb per 1,000 sq ft using a hand spreader or rotary spreader. Mix species in the hopper together — no need to seed separately.

After broadcasting, rake seed lightly into the top 1/4 inch of soil or use a lawn roller to press seed into the surface. Good seed-to-soil contact is the single most important factor in germination.

Water lightly twice daily for the first 2–3 weeks to keep the soil surface moist. Bermudagrass will show first (14–21 days), followed by Buffalograss (21–40 days) and Desert Marigold (14–30 days).

Once seedlings reach 2 inches, taper irrigation to every 2–3 days, then weekly, then monthly as the stand matures.

After the first full growing season, this mix requires little intervention. Deep water once a month in summer if monsoons are below average.

Mow once or twice per season at 3–4 inches to manage height and encourage density. Desert Marigold can be cut back in fall to promote fresh spring growth.

No fertilizer needed — desert-adapted species are efficient with native soil nutrients.
