The Carbon Cowboy AMP Grazing Mix is a six-species perennial pasture blend engineered for adaptive multi-paddock and planned rotational grazing systems. Every species in this blend was selected for its ability to tolerate intensive defoliation events, recover rapidly during rest periods, and contribute a distinct nutritional or soil health function. Orchardgrass and Tall Fescue provide the bulk dry matter yield. Red and White Clover fix nitrogen biologically and elevate crude protein levels. Chicory and Plantain — often called the "mineral miners" — access deep subsoil nutrients that grass roots cannot reach, producing forage with measurably higher mineral density. The result is a high-performance sward that supports both animal performance and soil regeneration simultaneously.

AMP Grazing Optimized

AMP grazing requires species that can tolerate near-complete defoliation followed by 60–90 day recovery periods. Orchardgrass, White Clover, and Chicory all have well-documented resilience under these conditions. Tall Fescue adds wear tolerance for sacrifice paddocks and high-traffic areas near water and shade.

Biological Nitrogen

White Clover and Red Clover together can fix 100–150 lb of nitrogen per acre annually in a well-managed sward. This biological nitrogen supports grass growth without purchased fertilizer inputs, reducing operating costs and improving the carbon footprint of the grazing operation. Clover presence also increases crude protein in the grazed diet.

Mineral Density

Chicory and Plantain are deep-rooted herbs that extract calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc from subsoil horizons. Including them in a sward has been associated with reduced mineral supplementation costs and improved livestock health metrics in research trials in New Zealand, Australia, and the U.S.

Fast Recovery

Recovery speed determines how tightly you can run your rotation. Orchardgrass is one of the fastest-recovering cool-season grasses available, regrowth beginning within days of defoliation when moisture and temperature are adequate. White Clover and Chicory also recover rapidly from grazing events when rested appropriately.

Year-Round Productivity

Cool-season species in this blend (Orchardgrass, Tall Fescue, White Clover) produce heavily in spring and fall. Chicory extends summer production during the mid-summer slump when cool-season grasses slow. This staggered seasonality reduces the depth of the summer forage gap and supports more consistent animal performance year-round.

How to Use the Carbon Cowboy AMP Grazing Mix

Site Prep

Control sod competition aggressively before seeding. For pasture renovation, spray or till existing sod.

Soil test and apply lime to reach pH 6.0–6.5 minimum. Clover and Chicory are sensitive to low pH. A firm, level seedbed is essential for the small-seeded Chicory and White Clover fractions.

Seeding

Drill at 10 lb per acre at 1/4 inch depth for the small-seeded fraction (Chicory, Clover) or broadcast and cultipack. Inoculate Red and White Clover with a clover-specific Rhizobium inoculant.

For inter-seeding into existing pasture, graze tight first, then broadcast and drag lightly. Soil contact is everything with fine-seeded species.

Establishment

Allow the stand to reach 6–8 inches before the first grazing event. Graze lightly and briefly the first time — just enough to set the plants back and encourage tillering.

Do not graze below 3 inches during establishment. Chicory and Clover establish more slowly than grasses — do not judge the stand by grass performance alone.

Termination or Management

This is a long-term perennial planting. Manage with planned rotational grazing — graze to 2–3 inches, then rest 45–90 days depending on season and soil moisture.

Avoid continuous or set-stocking grazing, which selectively eliminates the broadleaf herbs and Clover. Overseed thin areas every 3–5 years to maintain species diversity.

How many acres does one 20 lb bag cover?
One 20 lb bag seeds approximately 2 acres when drilled at the recommended rate. For overseeding into existing pasture, the seeding rate can be reduced to 6–8 lb per acre, extending coverage to 2.5–3 acres per bag.
How long before I can start my AMP rotation?
Begin light introductory grazing when the stand reaches 6–8 inches — typically 6–10 weeks after germination for fall plantings, 8–12 weeks for spring plantings. Start your full AMP rotation in year two when the perennial species have developed mature root systems capable of supporting full defoliation events and complete recovery.
Will this blend work in the Southeast?
Orchardgrass and Tall Fescue perform best in the transition zone and cooler areas of the Southeast. In deep South regions (zones 8–9), performance may be limited by summer heat. For hot, humid climates, consider mixing with warm-season grasses or transitioning to a tropical legume-based sward during summer months.
Does this mix include endophyte-free fescue?
Yes. This blend uses novel endophyte or endophyte-free Tall Fescue varieties to avoid the cattle performance and reproductive issues associated with toxic endophyte strains. If you are seeding near existing stands of KY-31 endophyte-infected fescue, consider a more aggressive renovation to prevent contamination.
Can I use this mix for hay production?
Yes, though this blend is optimized for grazing. For hay use, remove Chicory and Plantain from the seeding rate consideration — they do not cure well in hay and reduce hay quality. First cutting at early boot stage for grasses and early bloom for clovers maximizes quality. Expect 3–4 cuts per season in productive years.
