Why Shade Lawns Fail (And How to Fix It)

Lack of Light: Most standard grasses need 6+ hours of sun to survive. Shade-tolerant varieties, like Fine Fescues, have a different leaf structure that allows them to capture more light with less exposure.

Tree Root Competition: Trees aren’t just stealing light; they are stealing water and nutrients. Soil compaction from tree roots prevents grass from getting established. Our mixes focus on drought tolerance to help grass compete.

The 3-Step Shade Audit

1

Measure Sunlight

Check the area at 10am, 1pm, and 4pm. If it’s shaded in all three, you need Heavy Shade Fine Fescue.

2

Mow Higher

Shade grass needs more surface area to catch light. Set your mower to 3.5 or 4 inches.

3

Reduce Nitrogen

Shade grass grows slower. Use 1/2 the fertilizer of your sunny areas to avoid burning.

Pick Your Shade Level

Every low-light lawn is different. Match your sunlight exposure to the right seed mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about growing grass in low-light and under trees.

Can grass grow in full shade?
All grass needs some light to survive. “Full shade” usually means less than 2 hours of direct sun. While our Fine Fescue mixes are incredibly tolerant, any area with zero direct sunlight may struggle. In those cases, trimming tree limbs to allow dappled light is the best solution.
What’s the best seed under pine trees?
Pine trees create an acidic soil environment. Fine Fescues (Chewings, Hard, and Creeping Red) are naturally more tolerant of acidic soil and low moisture. For best results, rake up excess pine needles and apply a bit of lime to balance the pH before seeding.
Should I overseed shade areas in spring or fall?
Fall is the best time for shade areas. It allows the new grass to establish while trees are losing leaves, which temporarily increases the amount of sunlight reaching the soil. Spring is the second-best option, but you must seed early before the tree canopy fully fills in.
