Greenfield Blend by StarSeed Seed
Proprietary Blend | SKU: PB-GRFD
What is the Greenfield Blend?
The Greenfield Blend is a proprietary multi-species seed mix from StarSeed, a NativeSeed Group company and one of North America's leading producers of certified forage and conservation seed. The blend was developed specifically for homesteaders and small-farm operators in the 1–40 acre scale — a grower segment that needs a practical, multi-function cover crop blend without the formulation complexity or minimum order quantities of custom mixes. The blend architecture combines three functional species groups: grasses (for biomass, weed suppression, and soil structure), legumes (for nitrogen fixation and protein), and broadleaf herbs (for diversity, early-season pollinator forage, and biological activity). Together, these functional groups deliver the core benefits associated with multi-species cover cropping: improved soil organic matter, nitrogen cycling, erosion control, and biodiversity above and below the soil surface. StarSeed selects and adjusts the Greenfield Blend composition seasonally based on species availability from their certified production network, ensuring the mix always contains the highest-quality seed lots available. The specific species and percentages vary by season and shipment. Growers needing a fixed, documented species list for organic certification records or research purposes should contact us to request a current composition sheet at the time of order.

Why Choose This Seed?
Multi-Function Cover Crop Performance
The Greenfield Blend is engineered to perform multiple soil and ecosystem functions simultaneously — something no single-species cover crop can achieve. Legume components fix atmospheric nitrogen and reduce fertilizer input requirements for the following cash crop. Grass components produce high biomass that builds organic matter and outcompetes weeds. Broadleaf components activate soil microbial communities through diverse root exudate chemistry and provide early-season forage for pollinators. This multi-function performance is the core argument for multi-species cover cropping over traditional single-species approaches.
Nitrogen Fixation Included
The legume components in the Greenfield Blend fix atmospheric nitrogen through root nodule bacteria, contributing biologically available nitrogen to the soil system. The exact amount of nitrogen fixed depends on the legume species present, inoculation status, and growing conditions — but multi-species blends with strong legume components regularly deliver 40–100+ lbs of nitrogen equivalent per acre in well-managed systems. This reduces or eliminates the need for nitrogen fertilizer application on the following cash crop, providing direct economic value beyond the standard cover crop benefits.
Designed for the 1–40 Acre Operator
Large commercial seed blenders typically serve operations of 500+ acres with large minimum orders and species lists optimized for row crop agriculture. The Greenfield Blend was designed for the gap between the home gardener and the commercial row crop farmer — the homesteader with a market garden and a few pasture acres, the small-scale livestock operator, or the farmer transitioning from conventional to diversified production. The seeding rate (15–20 lbs/acre), packaging, and species composition are all calibrated for this scale of operation.
Pasture Improvement Overseeding
The Greenfield Blend can be used as an overseeding mix in thin or degraded pastures to improve species diversity and forage quality without full renovation. Broadcast into a closely grazed or mowed pasture in late summer or early fall for fall establishment. The legume components add nitrogen to the existing stand while the broadleaf and grass components fill in bare spots and improve forage density. This is a lower-cost pasture improvement strategy than full renovation and can significantly increase carrying capacity and forage quality within one to two seasons.
Honest About Limitations
The Greenfield Blend's species composition varies by season based on StarSeed's production availability — it is not a fixed-formula product. Growers requiring a certified, documented species list for organic certification or research purposes should request a current composition sheet at time of order. This blend is not formulated as a direct substitute for single-species pure stands in specific high-precision applications (e.g., varietal forage research, pure legume stands for maximum N fixation). It is a companion and gateway product, not a replacement for custom-formulated blends in complex or high-precision systems.
How to Plant the Greenfield Blend
Site Prep
Terminate existing vegetation before seeding, particularly in heavily weedy fields transitioning from fallow or conventional production. A light tillage pass followed by rolling or cultipackering creates the firm seedbed needed for good germination across the blend's diverse seed sizes. For overseeding into existing pasture, mow or graze closely to open the canopy and reduce competition. Avoid planting into standing water or soils that drain poorly — the blend is not designed for wet conditions.
Seeding
Drill at 15–20 lbs/acre at 1/4–1/2 inch depth, or broadcast at 20 lbs/acre and firm with a roller. Calibrate your drill for mixed particle sizes — most grain drills handle this blend well on medium settings. Broadcast seeding requires more seed and firmer post-seeding packing to ensure contact. Consider inoculating the legume fraction with appropriate Rhizobium before planting. Plant into moisture — avoid dry seedbed seeding in summer months. Germination of annual components begins in 5–10 days under good conditions.
Establishment
Annual components establish quickly (5–14 days germination, canopy closure in 30–45 days). Perennial components establish more slowly in year one, focusing on root development rather than above-ground growth — this is normal. The fast-establishing annual components provide early ground cover and weed suppression while slower perennials root in. Avoid grazing or cutting until the stand is at least 8–10 inches tall and roots are established (typically 45–60 days after seeding). Early grazing or cutting of young stands significantly reduces stand density.
Long-Term Care
For cover crop use: terminate the blend at the appropriate stage for your farming system (flowering for maximum biomass and N fixation, or earlier for faster residue breakdown). Use roller-crimper, tillage, or herbicide per your system. For pasture use: manage grazing pressure to avoid overgrazing the perennial components — leave 4–6 inches of residual height and allow 21–30 day recovery periods between grazing events. Overseeding in fall of year two can add fresh annual components and boost species diversity as the perennial framework matures.

Questions & Answers
What species are in the Greenfield Blend?
The Greenfield Blend contains a combination of grasses, legumes, and broadleaf herbs designed to deliver cover crop and pasture improvement functions. The exact species and percentages vary by production season and StarSeed's seed availability — this is intentional to ensure the highest-quality seed lots are always used. The blend always includes species from all three functional groups (grass, legume, broadleaf). If you need a specific, documented species list for organic certification records, research trials, or purchase documentation, contact us at order time and we will provide a current composition sheet for the lot you receive.
Do I need to inoculate the legume seed?
Inoculation of the legume fraction is strongly recommended for maximum nitrogen fixation, especially in fields with no recent history of the target legume species. Rhizobium bacteria that form nitrogen-fixing root nodules must be present in the soil or applied at planting — and the specific strains a legume needs may not be present at effective levels in fields without a recent history of that legume. Without inoculation in new fields, the legume plants will grow normally but will not fix significant nitrogen. Pre-inoculated seed is available on request. If purchasing uninoculated seed, apply the appropriate commercial Rhizobium inoculant to the legume seed immediately before planting for best results.
Can the Greenfield Blend be used as winter forage for livestock?
Yes — the perennial components of the Greenfield Blend can provide winter forage in mild climates (Zones 6+) where the stand survives winter. Annual components in the blend will winterkill in cold climates, contributing organic matter, while the perennial components persist and resume growth in early spring. For dedicated winter forage use, consider pairing the Greenfield Blend with a winter-hardy cereal grain like the Triticale 813 (SS-TRIT) as an anchor species. The combination of the cereal grain's high biomass and the Greenfield Blend's species diversity provides superior winter forage production compared to either alone.
How does the Greenfield Blend compare to buying individual species?
Sourcing, calibrating, and blending 6–10 individual species requires significant agronomic knowledge, access to multiple seed suppliers, blending equipment, and time. The Greenfield Blend removes all of those barriers — it arrives as a single, ready-to-sow mix formulated by StarSeed's agronomists. For growers new to multi-species cover cropping, or operations where simplicity and time efficiency matter more than full customization, the blend is the practical choice. Growers who need a specific species ratio, want to include species not in the blend, or have highly specific nitrogen fixation or biomass targets may benefit from a custom blend consultation.
What is StarSeed and how does it relate to Nature's Seed?
StarSeed is a premium seed producer and part of the NativeSeed Group — the same parent company as Nature's Seed. StarSeed specializes in certified forage, cover crop, and conservation seed production, with production networks across the U.S. and Canada. As a NativeSeed Group company, StarSeed seed sold through Nature's Seed is subject to the same quality standards — independently tested germination and purity, no fillers, and transparent lot documentation. The Greenfield Blend is a StarSeed house product sold through the Nature's Seed storefront as a partner offering.
What planting zones does the Greenfield Blend work in?
The Greenfield Blend is formulated for broad adaptability across USDA Zones 4–9 as a seasonal cover crop or pasture improvement mix. Because it is sown as an annual or short-term cover (not a permanent stand in most applications), it is less zone-constrained than perennial grass or wildflower products. The annual components perform in any zone where the growing season allows 45–60 days before killing frost. The perennial components winter-survive in Zones 5+ with adequate snow cover or mild winters. For specific zone performance questions or if you are in an edge-case climate, contact our seed team for guidance.
