Sand Love Grass

Eragrostis trichodes, commonly known as sand love grass, is a warm-season bunchgrass indigenous to sandy habitats in Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and occasionally northeastern New Mexico. Typically standing between 30 to 48 inches tall, this grass boasts a robust root system, making it valuable for soil and water conservation efforts. Unlike its counterpart, weeping love grass, sand love grass features wider and tender leaves, primarily clustered at the base. Planting sand love grass is a delicate process due to its small seeds, which should not be buried more than half an inch deep. Ideal planting times coincide with the onset of the spring season, just before the rainy period begins. Despite its nutritional value and palatability, sand love grass often faces grazing pressure in mixed vegetation pastures. It is commonly seeded alongside other warm-season grasses and finds its place in dryland pastures where summer growth is desired. However, continuous re-seeding may be necessary as the stand begins to thin over time.
