Needle & Thread

Stipa comata, commonly known as needle and thread, is a perennial grass native to the prairies, plains, and foothills of the western United States. Characterized by its distinctive needle-like awns, this grass begins growth early in the spring, providing valuable forage for livestock before entering dormancy in early to mid-summer. While its forage value is significant, caution is advised as the awns can cause injuries to grazing animals. Needle and thread grass is highly adapted to arid environments, displaying exceptional drought tolerance and a preference for excessively drained sandy soils. Its growth cycle typically spans from early spring to July, with flowering occurring in June and maturation in July. Despite its resilience, needle and thread grass is not known to be vulnerable to insects or other pests, making it a reliable component of natural ecosystems and a valuable resource for livestock grazing in regions with limited water availability.
