Scientific Name: Hordeum brachyantherum ssp. californicum
California barley is a cool season perennial bunchgrass native to California, Oregon, and Nevada. It is short-lived but fast-growing. California barley is found in a wide range of habitats, from mountain meadows and pastures to freshwater wetlands, tidal marshes, along rivers and creeks, and beside sloping roadsides up to 8,500 feet in elevation. It can tolerate heavy clay, alkaline or saline soils and is often used for its deer resistance, and abilities to grow in a wide range of soils; making it particularly useful for restoration and revegetation projects.
