Alumroot

Heuchera richardsonii, commonly known as alumroot or Richardson’s alumroot, is a striking perennial plant celebrated for its distinctive features and ecological significance. Its thick cluster of basal leaves bears a resemblance to those of the geranium, adding to its visual appeal. Rising from heavy perennial taproots, one to four leafless hairy stems ascend up to two feet in height, showcasing the plant’s robust stature. Clusters of yellowish to purple flowers adorn the upper part of the stem, creating a captivating display in its native habitats. These flowers typically occur in groups of ten to twenty, adding splashes of color to the landscape. In the wild, Richardson’s alumroot can be found gracing hilltops and sideslopes in native prairies. Despite its charm, it is often overlooked by grazing cattle, likely due to its astringent qualities. Interestingly, slightly greater populations of these plants are often discovered in moderately or lightly grazed pastures, possibly due to the improved soil moisture conditions found in these environments.
