Native to Europe, timothy is a cool-season perennial bunchgrass well adapted to cool moist areas of North America. It develops rapidly and can grow to a height of two feet. Timothy is used for hay and grazing where it’s especially desirable for horses. Tolerates a wide range of soil types and can handle waterlogged soils. Timothy is also quite cold hardy and resistant to insect and disease problems, as well as being fairly drought tolerant. It can be grown without irrigation in areas receiving at least 15 inches of annual precipitation.

Product Overview
Timothy grass (Phleum pratense) is a cool-season, perennial bunchgrass native to Europe and now widely grown across North America. It’s prized for its fast establishment, premium forage quality, and broad environmental adaptability. When planted in well-prepared soils and managed properly, timothy forms dense, upright clumps up to 2 feet tall and produces signature cylindrical seed heads from midsummer through early fall.
• Growth Habit: Bunch-forming (non-rhizomatous), making hay harvest easier and minimizing thatch
• Soil Adaptation: Thrives in loams to heavier, poorly drained soils; tolerates periodic waterlogging
• Cold Tolerance: Extremely hardy and reliable in northern winters and transitional climates
• Drought Resistance: Moderate—performs well with 15″ or more of annual rainfall
• Forage Quality: Fine stems and tender leaves highly palatable to horses, cattle, sheep, and goats
• Rapid Establishment: Germinates quickly in cool, moist soils for spring or fall planting
Timothy is a foundational species in hay production—particularly for horses—and is often blended with legumes like alfalfa or clover to extend the harvest season and improve forage balance. Its resilience in both wet winters and summer dry spells makes it a versatile and dependable forage crop.
Directions
Seeding Rate:
• Broadcast: 8–10 lb per acre
• Drilled: 4–6 lb per acre in pure stands
• For mixes: reduce rate accordingly when blending with legumes or other grasses
Planting Time:
• Early spring or late summer to early fall, when soil temps are 50–65 °F
Soil Preparation:
• Fine, firm seedbed
• Soil pH 6.0–7.0
• Enrich low-fertility soils with compost or organic matter for better moisture retention
Harvest & Management:
• First cutting at 10–15% bloom for optimal quality
• Allow 4–6 weeks between cuttings
• Conduct annual soil tests to guide fertilizer needs
• Light topdressing and occasional aeration support long-term productivity
Ideal For
• Equine operations seeking premium hay
• Mixed-species pastures in cool, moist climates
• Forage producers serving high-value hay markets
• Northern farms and transitional U.S. grazing systems
