California Habitat Mix

Bring the spirit of California’s wild landscapes home with our California Habitat Mix—a thoughtfully curated blend of six native grasses selected for their natural beauty, drought resilience, and ecological value. Perfect for meadow restorations, erosion-prone hillsides, and water-wise landscapes, this mix supports pollinators, birds, and native wildlife while requiring minimal maintenance.

Seed Composition

  • California Brome (Bromus carinatus): Quick-establishing bunchgrass that suppresses weeds and provides early green-up.
  • Blue Wildrye (Elymus glaucus): Fine-bladed and ornamental, with graceful seedheads and cool-season growth.
  • California Barley (Hordeum californicum): Early-season groundcover and forage source for native wildlife.
  • Idaho Fescue (Festuca idahoensis): Dense, fine-textured clumps with deep roots for excellent drought tolerance.
  • Purple Needlegrass (Stipa pulchra): California’s state grass, featuring long, elegant awns and year-round cover.
  • One-Sided Bluegrass (Poa secunda): Low-growing, gap-filling species that tolerates foot traffic and poor soils.

Key Benefits

  • Drought-Adapted: Once established, these deep-rooted natives thrive on rainfall alone—no irrigation needed.
  • Wildlife Habitat: Offers food, cover, and nesting areas for pollinators, birds, and small mammals.
  • Erosion Control: Fibrous roots stabilize soil, making this mix ideal for slopes, banks, and disturbed sites.
  • Seasonal Beauty: Dynamic textures and hues from spring green-up to golden fall seedheads and winter structure.

Planting & Maintenance

  • Seeding Rate: 15–20 lb per acre (approx. 0.35–0.45 lb per 1,000 ft²).
  • Best Timing: Fall seeding is ideal to leverage winter rains; spring is possible with light irrigation.
  • Site Prep: Remove weeds and loosen soil to 2–3″ depth; a firm, fine seedbed improves germination.
  • Watering: Keep moist until seedlings are 3–4″ tall, then allow rainfall to sustain the stand.
  • Maintenance: Mow or scalping once per year after seed set rejuvenates the stand and controls thatch.

Ideal For

  • California native meadows and wildflower gardens
  • Wildlife corridors and conservation easements
  • Low-maintenance, low-water landscaping projects
  • Freeway medians, parkways, and roadside plantings
  • Slopes, streambanks, and erosion-prone zones
