Rapeseed

Brassica napus, commonly known as rapeseed, is an annual plant that belongs to neither the legume nor grass family. Primarily utilized for pasture, rapeseed serves as a valuable supplemental or emergency source of grazing for hogs and sheep. Its nutritional value rivals that of legumes, boasting high levels of protein, calcium, and phosphorus. Rapeseed thrives in fertile, well-drained soils and exhibits a heavy reliance on nitrogen. While it matures rapidly, typically ready for grazing within 8 to 10 weeks after seeding, caution is advised when feeding it to milk cows, as it may impart a distinct flavor to the milk. Resembling rutabaga turnips in leaf and stalk appearance, rapeseed is known for its thriftiness and robust growth. In the Northern Corn Belt, rapeseed is typically seeded in spring, while in the southern states, fall seeding is more common. It is often seeded alone but can also be mixed with oats to allow for earlier grazing. As the oat pasture reaches its peak, rapeseed continues to grow, providing high-quality pasture well into the cooler fall months.
