Silphium laciniatum, commonly known as compass plant, is a tall, robust wildflower native to the tallgrass prairies of North America. The compass plant typically grows to heights of 6 to 9 feet, making it one of the tallest species in the prairie ecosystem. Its deeply lobed leaves are deeply cut, resembling the points of a compass, hence its name. These large leaves can measure up to 2 feet in length and form a basal rosette, with smaller leaves ascending the tall, sturdy stems. In mid to late summer, Silphium laciniatum produces bright yellow, daisy-like flowers atop branching stems, attracting a variety of pollinators like bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. Compass plants are well-adapted to the harsh conditions of the prairie, thriving in full sun and well-drained, nutrient-poor soils. Their deep taproots can penetrate several feet into the ground, helping them access water and nutrients during drought periods.
