What is the California Native Erosion Control Mix

This California native erosion control mix contains three workhorse species, Bromus carinatus, Trifolium ciliolatum, and Festuca microstachys, all selected for superior ability to stabilize soils, improve fertility, and promote long-term ecosystem resilience in disturbed landscapes. Festuca microstachys (Small Fescue) is an annual that establishes very quickly thrives in a variety of soil conditions. It creates an initial mat of fibrous roots that hold topsoil in place while the other species establish. Its adaptability makes it a reliable component of erosion control mixes, especially in areas with shallow soils or variable moisture. Bromus carinatus (California brome) is a fast-establishing, competitive cool-season perennial bunchgrass with a deep root system. Trifolium ciliolatum (Foothill clover) is a nitrogen-fixing legume that germinates quickly, enriches the soil for neighboring grasses and provides pollinator habitat.

By anchoring soil, suppressing weeds, and supporting biodiversity, this blend restores disturbed sites and reduces runoff during winter rains. Use this blend to secure slopes, streambanks, and construction sites prone to erosion.
