What is the Thin Pasture Fix Kit?

A 3-species pasture renovation kit designed to fill in bare spots, thicken thin stands, and improve forage quality in degraded pastures. Ships as three separate bags — Perennial Ryegrass (5 lb), White Clover (5 lb), and Orchardgrass (5 lb) — so you can broadcast all three together or adjust ratios for your specific conditions.

Why Choose This Seed?

Three Species, Three Functions

This kit is not random. Each species has a specific role. Perennial Ryegrass germinates fast (7-14 days) and fills bare ground before weeds can establish — it is the quick cover. White Clover fixes nitrogen and spreads by stolons, permanently filling gaps and feeding the grasses around it. Orchardgrass adds deep-rooted, drought-tolerant structure that holds the stand together through summer heat. Together, these three create a self-improving pasture that gets better each year.

Free Nitrogen from White Clover

White Clover in this kit fixes 75-200 lbs of nitrogen per acre annually through its symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium bacteria. That nitrogen feeds the ryegrass and orchardgrass growing alongside it. Over 2-3 years, a clover-grass pasture reduces or eliminates the need for synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. The clover also increases forage crude protein by 3-5 percentage points compared to grass-only stands.

Ships as Separate Bags — Not Pre-Mixed

We ship this kit as three individual bags, not a pre-mixed blend. This gives you flexibility. Broadcasting all three together covers about 10,000 sq ft. But if your pasture has specific problems — heavy bare spots, nitrogen-deficient areas, dry slopes — you can adjust the ratio. Put extra ryegrass on bare ground for fast cover. Heavier clover in nitrogen-poor zones. More orchardgrass on dry hillsides.

Covers Approximately 10,000 Sq Ft

The full 15 lb kit covers approximately 10,000 sq ft (roughly 1/4 acre) at recommended seeding rates when all three species are broadcast together. For larger pastures, multiple kits can be combined. For smaller areas or heavier overseeding rates, one kit will cover proportionally less area but produce a denser initial stand.

Best for Cool-Season Pasture Zones

This kit performs best in USDA Zones 3-7 and the upper transition zone (Zone 8 in cooler microclimates). All three species are cool-season plants that thrive in spring and fall with peak growth between 60-80°F. In the Deep South (Zone 9+), these species will struggle through summer heat. If you are in a warm-season zone, this is not the right kit — contact us for warm-season pasture options.

How to Use the Thin Pasture Fix Kit

Prepare the Pasture

Mow existing pasture as short as possible (2 inches or less). If thatch is heavy, drag or harrow to open the soil surface. The goal is seed-to-soil contact — seed sitting on top of thick thatch will not germinate. For severely degraded pastures with mostly bare ground, light disking or a no-till drill will improve results. Do not apply herbicide before overseeding unless you are starting from scratch.

Broadcast All Three Bags

Open all three bags and broadcast evenly across the target area. You can mix the contents together in a bucket first, or broadcast each species separately in different passes for more control. Use a hand spreader, broadcast spreader, or scatter by hand for small areas. For the clover, mixing with dry sand (4:1 sand to seed) helps with even distribution due to the small seed size.

Press and Water

After broadcasting, press seed into the soil surface using a cultipacker, lawn roller, or by dragging a section of chain-link fence behind an ATV. Seed-to-soil contact is the single most important factor for germination success. Water lightly if no rain is expected within 48 hours. Keep the seeded area moist (not saturated) for the first 2-3 weeks until seedlings are visible.

First Grazing

Allow 60-90 days before first grazing to let seedlings establish root systems. The ryegrass will be visible first (7-14 days), followed by clover (10-21 days) and orchardgrass (14-28 days). When plants reach 6-8 inches, a light grazing is acceptable. Avoid heavy continuous grazing during the first season — rotational grazing gives new plants recovery time.

Questions & Answers

Can I plant this kit in spring?

Yes, spring planting works — plant as early as soil can be worked, ideally March through April in Zones 5-7. Fall planting (September-October) is preferred because it gives seedlings the cool fall and winter months to establish before summer stress. Spring plantings face more weed competition and summer heat pressure.

How much area does the kit cover?

The full 15 lb kit (all three bags combined) covers approximately 10,000 sq ft, which is roughly 1/4 acre. For a full acre, you would need approximately 4 kits. Coverage depends on how thick your existing stand is — thinner pastures need heavier seeding rates.

Do I need to inoculate the White Clover seed?

For maximum nitrogen fixation, yes. White Clover requires Rhizobium trifolii bacteria to fix nitrogen. If your soil has not had clover growing in it recently, inoculating the seed before planting ensures the bacteria are present. Inoculant is inexpensive and applied by moistening seed and coating with inoculant powder just before broadcasting.

Can livestock graze during establishment?

No. Keep livestock off the seeded area for a minimum of 60-90 days after planting. New seedlings need time to establish root systems before being grazed or trampled. The first grazing should be a light, short-duration rotation when plants reach 6-8 inches. Heavy continuous grazing during establishment will destroy the new stand.

Will this work in the South / warm-season zones?

This kit is designed for cool-season pasture zones (USDA Zones 3-7). All three species are cool-season plants. In Zone 8, they may work in fall-winter-spring but will go dormant or die in summer heat. In Zone 9 and warmer, this kit is not recommended. Contact us for warm-season pasture seed options.

Can I use this on a new pasture with no existing grass?

Yes. This kit works for both overseeding thin pastures and establishing new pasture from bare ground. For bare ground, prepare a firm, smooth seedbed by light disking and then packing. Broadcast, press, and keep moist. The seeding rate of 15 lbs per 10,000 sq ft is appropriate for new establishment as well as renovation.
