Planting Aids for your Seed

What is the California Habitat Mix?

This mix of California native perennial bunchgrasses is designed to provide critical habitat and biodiversity across the state. Our mix of locally-collected and grown species includes Bromus carinatus, Elymus glaucus, Hordeum californicum, Festuca idahoensis, Stipa pulchra, and Poa secunda.

This blend is designed to restore healthy, resilient grasslands that can withstand drought and invasive species.

Bromus carinatus and Elymus glaucus establish quickly, providing early cover and erosion control. Hordeum californicum adds adaptability and wildlife forage, while Festuca idahoensis offers dense, fine-textured tufts for long-term stability. Stipa pulchra, California’s state grass, anchors the mix with deep roots that improve soils and sequester carbon. Finally, Poa secunda greens up early each season, extending habitat value for pollinators and wildlife. Together, these species recreate the structure and function of native grasslands, supporting lasting ecological restoration throughout California.

These native bunchgrasses form dense tufts that offer nesting sites for ground-nesting birds, and cover for small mammals, reptiles, and insects. Grasses like Bromus carinatus, Elymus glaucus, and Hordeum californicum produce seed that is eaten a wide variety of species. Once established, this seed mix needs little to no additional watering outside of natural precipitation, and little maintenance outside of occasional mowing.

Product Uses

Habitat Restoration

Habitat Restoration

The California Habitat Mix is ideal for restoring native ecosystems that have been disturbed by development, fire, or erosion. By using native grasses, this mix helps reestablish the natural plant communities that support pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. This mix promotes long-term ecological balance and resilience. It’s commonly used in conservation efforts, government-funded restoration projects, and on private land.

Erosion Control

Erosion Control

The deep roots of these native bunchgrasses stabilize soil and help prevent erosion on hillsides, slopes, and disturbed areas. Unlike non-native ground covers, these grasses are adapted to California’s soil and climate, making them highly effective for long-term soil retention. Over time, they create a dense root network that anchors the land naturally. This makes the mix a smart, sustainable choice for erosion-prone sites.

Wildlife Corridors

Wildlife Corridors

By providing natural food and shelter, this mix helps create safe pathways and foraging grounds for local wildlife, especially pollinators, songbirds, and small mammals. It’s often used to connect fragmented habitats in suburban or rural areas. The native grasses encourage biodiversity by supporting native insects and nesting sites. Establishing these corridors can improve the health of surrounding ecosystems.

Water-Wise Landscaping

Water-Wise Landscaping

Perfect for drought-prone regions, this mix establishes quickly with irrigation but thrives long-term with minimal water input. It offers a low-maintenance, sustainable alternative to conventional lawns or exotic ornamental grasses. Once rooted, it requires no regular watering and can survive California’s dry summers naturally. This makes it a top choice for xeriscaping and water conservation efforts.

Restore and Repair Degraded Land

Use this mix to convert underused or bare fields into beautiful, functioning native grasslands. It brings visual appeal through seasonal color changes and flowing textures while restoring soil health and attracting beneficial insects. It’s especially useful for landowners who want a natural look with little maintenance. Over time, the grasses self-sustain and reseed, reducing long-term management costs.

Questions & Answers

Why should I use the California Habitat Mix instead of traditional grass seed?

This mix is designed specifically for California’s climate and native ecosystems. It uses less water, supports local wildlife, and requires far less maintenance than traditional turf grasses—making it a smart, sustainable choice for long-term landscape health.

What are the main benefits of using this seed mix?

You’ll conserve water, prevent erosion, support pollinators and wildlife, and create a beautiful, natural-looking landscape. It’s also ideal for land restoration, fire-wise landscaping, and areas where low maintenance is a priority.

How does this mix help with water conservation?

Once established, the native grasses require little to no supplemental irrigation. That means lower water bills, better drought resilience, and less reliance on artificial watering systems.

What wildlife does this mix support?

It creates habitat for native bees, butterflies, songbirds, and beneficial insects. These grasses offer food, shelter, and nesting areas—essential for maintaining a healthy, balanced ecosystem.

Will this mix reduce my landscape maintenance?

Yes. Unlike lawns that need frequent mowing, fertilizing, and watering, this native mix thrives with minimal care once established. This mix performs best with mowing 2-3 times a year, ideally in the late fall, early spring, and/or mid summer.

Is this mix good for large open spaces or meadows?

Absolutely. This mix is perfect for transforming open land into beautiful native grasslands that are both functional and visually appealing. Over time, the mix develops a natural look that blends beautifully with surrounding landscapes.
