Why Start With a Starter Fertilizer?

Seedlings are at their most vulnerable in the first few weeks after germination. Their root systems are tiny, reaching only millimeters into the soil. A general-purpose fertilizer delivers too much nitrogen too fast—pushing top growth before roots can support it. Suståne 4-6-4 takes the opposite approach. Its phosphorus-forward formula (the middle number in 4-6-4) fuels root development first. Phosphorus drives the production of ATP, the energy molecule that powers cell division in growing root tips. Young plants with strong roots establish faster, tolerate drought sooner, and outcompete weeds more effectively. The organic matter in every granule also improves the soil environment around those fragile roots—holding moisture, supporting beneficial microbes, and creating the loose, well-aerated soil structure that new roots need to spread.

Why Choose This Seed?

Phosphorus-Rich Formula for Root Development

The 4-6-4 ratio puts phosphorus front and center—exactly what new seedlings need. Phosphorus drives root cell division and elongation during the critical first weeks after germination, helping young plants establish faster and access water and nutrients sooner. Because phosphorus moves slowly through soil (about 1/8 inch per year), placing it near the seed zone at planting time makes all the difference.

Certified for Organic Growing

Derived entirely from aerobically composted turkey litter, feather meal, bone meal, and sulfate of potash. Every ingredient is allowed for use in the production of certified organic crops. Whether you are growing organic vegetables, herbs, or establishing a new lawn, this fertilizer meets the standard without compromise.

50% Organic Matter — Feeds the Soil, Not Just the Plant

Half of every granule is organic matter. That means every application adds humus, beneficial microbes, and carbon to your soil. Humus can hold 80–90% of its weight in moisture, improves cation exchange capacity (so nutrients stay in the root zone), and builds the crumbly, well-aggregated soil structure that roots and earthworms thrive in.

Gentle Enough for New Seedlings

With a near-neutral pH, low salt index, and only 0.4% ammoniacal nitrogen, Suståne 4-6-4 will not burn tender seedlings or transplants. The slow-release nitrogen (80% of total N) feeds gradually as soil temperature and microbial activity dictate—matching the pace of young plant growth instead of overwhelming it.

Versatile Across Lawn, Garden, and Landscape

Use it for new lawn establishment, overseeding, vegetable gardens, flower beds, transplants, trees, and shrubs. Application rates scale from 6 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for overseeding to 25 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for new lawn prep. One 50 lb bag covers 2,000–8,300 sq ft depending on the application.

When to Apply

New lawns and sod: Apply before planting. Broadcast at 25 lbs per 1,000 sq ft and incorporate into the top 4 inches of soil before laying sod or seeding.

Overseeding: Mix 6 lbs of fertilizer with enough seed to cover 1,000 sq ft. Spread the mixture evenly over the target area.

Garden beds: Apply at planting time in spring or when transplanting. For established gardens, topdress in spring and again in early fall.

Apply any time during the growing season when plants are actively growing. Avoid frozen ground.

Application Rate

Turfgrass:

  • New lawn/sod: 25 lbs per 1,000 sq ft (incorporate into top 4 inches)
  • Overseeding: 6–10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft
  • Maintenance: 8–16 lbs per 1,000 sq ft

Garden & Landscape:

  • New beds: 3 lbs per 100 sq ft (1 cup per 10 sq ft)
  • Transplants: 1/4 cup per planting hole
  • Established plants: 1/4 cup per plant, topdressed
  • Potting mix: 2 cups per cubic foot of mix

How to Apply

  1. New lawns: Broadcast granules over prepared soil using a spreader. Rake or till into the top 4 inches. Plant seed or lay sod. Water thoroughly.
  2. Overseeding: Mix granules with grass seed in a bucket. Spread the blend with a broadcast or shoulder-bag spreader. Water lightly to settle seed into soil contact.
  3. Garden beds: Scatter granules over the bed surface. Work into the top 2–4 inches with a garden fork or tiller. Plant and water.
  4. Transplants: Place 1/4 cup in the planting hole. Set the plant on top. Backfill and water.

Tip: For slopes and hard-to-reach areas, pair with our Shoulder Bag Seeder/Spreader for even distribution.

Soil Type Adjustments

Adjust your application rate based on soil type for garden and landscape beds:

  • Sandy/light soil: 6 lbs per 100 sq ft — sandy soils hold fewer nutrients, so a higher rate compensates for faster leaching.
  • Clay loam/medium soil: 4 lbs per 100 sq ft — standard rate for most garden soils.
  • Silty clay/heavy soil: 2 lbs per 100 sq ft — heavy soils retain nutrients longer, so less is needed.

For turfgrass, use the standard rates regardless of soil type. The organic matter in every application will improve all soil types over time.

Questions & Answers

Can I use this fertilizer on vegetables and herbs?

Yes. Suståne 4-6-4 is derived entirely from organic ingredients and is allowed for use in the production of certified organic crops. It is an excellent choice for vegetable gardens, herb beds, fruit trees, and flower gardens. For new garden beds, apply 3 lbs per 100 sq ft (about 1 cup per 10 sq ft) and work into the top 4 inches of soil before planting. For transplants, place 1/4 cup in the planting hole before setting the plant. Reapply as a topdress in spring and fall to maintain fertility.

Will this fertilizer burn my new grass seedlings?

No. Suståne 4-6-4 is specifically designed for use with new seedlings and transplants. It has a near-neutral pH, low salt index, and only 0.4% ammoniacal nitrogen—the form most likely to cause burn. The remaining 3.2% of nitrogen is water-insoluble (slow-release), meaning it feeds gradually as soil microbes break it down. This gentle release pattern matches the pace of seedling growth. You can apply at the full recommended rate (25 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for new lawns) without risk to young turf.

How is this different from the 18-1-8 Maintenance Fertilizer?

The two products serve different stages of plant growth. The 4-6-4 Starter is phosphorus-forward (the 6 in the middle) to drive root development during establishment. The 18-1-8 Maintenance is nitrogen-forward (the 18) to feed leaf growth and color in established turf. Use 4-6-4 when planting new seed, laying sod, or transplanting. Once your grass is established and has been mowed 2–3 times (about 6–8 weeks), switch to 18-1-8+Fe for ongoing maintenance. The 4-6-4 is also fully organic, while the 18-1-8 is organic-based (combining organic compost with synthetic controlled-release nitrogen).

Does this attract animals or insects?

No. Unlike raw animal byproducts, the ingredients in Suståne 4-6-4 are aerobically composted at high temperatures before processing into granules. This composting process eliminates the odors that attract wildlife. The finished product has an earthy, soil-like smell—not a meat or manure smell. That said, dogs are sometimes attracted to organic fertilizers and may try to eat granules. We recommend keeping pets off treated areas until the product is watered in and the lawn has dried.

What is the coverage area for one 50 lb bag?

Coverage depends on your application type. At the full new-lawn establishment rate (25 lbs per 1,000 sq ft), one 50 lb bag covers approximately 2,000 sq ft. At the overseeding rate (6 lbs per 1,000 sq ft), one bag covers about 8,300 sq ft. For garden bed prep at 3 lbs per 100 sq ft, one bag covers roughly 1,667 sq ft. Most homeowners seeding a typical 3,000–5,000 sq ft lawn will need 2–3 bags at the new establishment rate.

Can I mix this directly with grass seed?

Yes—in fact, mixing with seed is one of the best application methods for overseeding. Combine 6 lbs of fertilizer with enough seed for 1,000 sq ft in a bucket and mix thoroughly. Then spread the blend with a broadcast or shoulder-bag spreader. The granules are similar in size to grass seed (200 SGN, 1.4–2.8 mm), so they distribute evenly together. This method ensures every seed lands near a nutrient source, giving it the best possible start. For new lawn establishment at heavier rates, broadcast the fertilizer separately and incorporate into the soil before seeding.
