Organic Maintenance Fertilizer 18-1-8+fe

Why Choose Organic-Based Fertilizer?
Most lawn fertilizers deliver a quick hit of synthetic nitrogen that fades in weeks and does nothing for your soil. Suståne 18-1-8+Fe takes a different approach. Its organic compost base adds humus and beneficial microbes to the soil with every application, building long-term fertility while feeding your grass. The result is a lawn that looks better season after season—not just the week after you fertilize. With 85% slow-release nitrogen, nutrients stay in the root zone for 12–16 weeks, reducing the frequency and total amount of fertilizer you need. And because the nutrients release gradually, there is virtually no burn risk—even in summer heat.

Why Choose This Seed?
85% Slow-Release Nitrogen
Four forms of nitrogen release over 12–16 weeks, feeding your lawn steadily instead of all at once. You get consistent green without surge growth, less mowing, and far lower burn risk than conventional fertilizers.
Iron-Boosted Color
Added iron sulfate (Fe) deepens lawn color naturally—especially during hot summer months when grass tends to fade. The result is a richer green that lasts, without excess nitrogen that stresses turf.
Organic Compost Base
Derived from aerobically composted turkey litter and hydrolyzed feathermeal, this fertilizer does more than feed grass—it feeds the soil. Organic matter improves microbial activity, water retention, and long-term soil structure.
Reduced Environmental Impact
Slow-release nutrients stay in the root zone longer, reducing runoff into waterways. Unlike fast-release synthetics, the organic base binds nutrients to the soil, making them available to plants rather than washing away.
Professional-Grade Performance
Used by golf courses, sports fields, and professional landscapers across the country. The 100 SGN granule size ensures even distribution through any broadcast spreader, and the 50 lb bag covers up to 9,000 sq ft at standard rates.
When to Apply
Cool-season lawns (fescue, bluegrass, rye): Apply in early spring and again in early fall. A third summer application with iron is optional for color.
Warm-season lawns (bermuda, buffalo, zoysia): Apply after spring green-up and every 8–12 weeks through the growing season.
Apply any time during the growing season when grass is actively growing. Avoid frozen or dormant turf.
Application Rate
- Standard maintenance: 5.5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft (delivers 1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft)
- Light feeding: 2.75 lbs per 1,000 sq ft (0.5 lb N per 1,000 sq ft)
- Heavy feeding: Up to 10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for cool-season turf in fall
- Per acre: 240–435 lbs per acre
How to Apply
- Mow your lawn 1–2 days before application.
- Load granules into a broadcast spreader (rotary or shoulder-bag style).
- Apply in two passes at half-rate, walking perpendicular directions for even coverage.
- Water in lightly within 24 hours to activate nutrient release.
Tip: Pair with our Shoulder Bag Seeder/Spreader for even distribution on slopes and uneven terrain.
Iron Stain Warning
This fertilizer contains iron sulfate, which can leave rust-colored stains on concrete, stone, and pavers. After applying:
- Sweep or blow all granules off hard surfaces immediately.
- Irrigate before granules dissolve on walkways.
- Avoid spreading near white stone, light-colored pavers, or pool decks.
Stains are cosmetic and typically fade with weathering, but prevention is easier than removal.
Questions & Answers
For most lawns, 2–3 applications per growing season is ideal. Cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass) benefit from a spring and fall application, with an optional light summer feeding. Warm-season grasses (bermuda, buffalo, zoysia) do best with applications every 8–12 weeks from spring green-up through late summer. Because 85% of the nitrogen is slow-release, each application feeds for 12–16 weeks—so you need fewer trips with the spreader compared to synthetic fertilizers.
The organic compost base makes this fertilizer much safer than many synthetic options. However, we recommend keeping pets and children off the lawn until the granules are watered in and the lawn has dried—typically a few hours after irrigation. The iron component is the main concern: if a dog eats a large amount of granules directly, it could cause stomach upset. Once watered into the soil, the product poses minimal risk. Always store bags in a secure location away from pets.
For brand-new seedlings, we recommend starting with our Organic Seed Starter Fertilizer 4-6-4 instead. Its higher phosphorus content supports root development during the critical establishment phase. Once your new grass has been mowed 2–3 times (about 6–8 weeks after germination), transition to 18-1-8+Fe for ongoing maintenance. The slow-release formula is gentle enough for young turf but delivers the higher nitrogen that established lawns need for thick, green growth.
Yes—the iron (Fe) in this product can leave rust-colored stains on concrete, stone pavers, and other hard surfaces. The fix is simple: sweep or blow all granules off hard surfaces immediately after applying, before watering. If granules sit on concrete and get wet, the iron dissolves and stains. The stains are cosmetic and usually fade over weeks of weathering, but prevention is much easier. Avoid applying near white stone, light pavers, or pool decks.
Suståne 18-1-8+Fe has a significantly higher nitrogen content than Milorganite (6-4-0) or most organic-only fertilizers. That means you apply less product per feeding and get stronger results. The “organic-based” formula combines the soil-health benefits of compost with the performance of controlled-release technology—giving you the best of both worlds. The added iron is another advantage for lawn color that many competitors lack.
At the standard maintenance rate of 5.5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft, one 50 lb bag covers approximately 9,000 sq ft. At a heavier rate of 10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft (for fall feeding on cool-season lawns), one bag covers about 5,000 sq ft. For warm-season lawns at the lighter 2.75 lb rate, one bag can cover up to 18,000 sq ft. Check the rate that matches your grass type and season.
