Deer Tongue Grass

Dichanthelium clandestinum, commonly known as deer tongue grass, is a warm-season bunchgrass characterized by its fibrous root system and stature ranging from 1 to 3 feet tall. With broad, short leaves, it blooms from May to September, adding subtle beauty to its surroundings. This native species is prevalent in the Eastern half of the United States, thriving in various habitats including damp sandy soil, marshy ground, thickets, wood margins, stream banks, roadsides, and shorelines. While deer-tongue grass prefers moist soils, it displays remarkable tolerance to drier environments and partial shade. It can be established through broadcast or drilling methods, with optimal seeding times in early spring or fall.
