Insecta-Flora Mix https://naturesseed.com/wildflower-seed/regional-wildflower-mixes/insecta-flora-mix/ https://naturesseed.com/wildflower-seed/regional-wildflower-mixes/insecta-flora-mix/#respond Thu, 16 Feb 2023 09:50:13 +0000 https://dev8.etecc.com/natures_seed.bak/product/insecta-flora-mix/

Our Insecta-Flora seed contains legumes and brilliant wildflowers to create a natural insectary that attracts and supports the beneficial predatory insects while providing an alternate target for crop destroyers, drawing them into an insect ambush. This mix is typically used in ecological restoration projects, landscaping, or gardening efforts aimed at creating habitats that benefit both insects and plants. We thoughtfully selected wildflowers that provide a variety of bold and delicate blossoms; with both early and late blooming wildflowers for color through the growing season. This mix has been designed with special attention to balanced percentages of annuals and perennials.

The colors in bloom will vary at different times of the year, and depending on how much water and sunlight are available to the wildflowers. The colors which you will see at different times of the year will include: blues, purples, pinks, reds, yellows, and oranges.

The actual composition of wildflowers will vary from season to season and from year to year, but generally you will receive the following wildflowers in each order of this mix:
Achillea millefolium: White yarrow
Calendula officinalis: Calendula
Centaurea cyanus: Bachelor buttons
Clarkia unguiculata: Mountain garland
Collinsia heterophylla: Chinese houses
Coriandum sativum: Coriander
Eschscholzia californica: California poppy
Gypsophilia elegans: Baby’s breath
Lasthenia californica: Goldfields
Linum lewisii: Blue flax
Lobularia maritima: Sweet alyssum
Lotus corniculatus: Birdfoot trefoil
Lupinus succulentus: Arroyo lupine
Melilotus indica: Gopher stopper
Trifolium incarnatum: Crimson clover

This mix will make a great addition to any area of your landscape that you want to enhance the color with wildflowers that are not commonly found in typical store-bought seed mixes, as well as legumes. Many of the seeds in this mix have been hand-harvested from the wild and, until now, have only been available to professional and commercial buyers. Now you can have a beautiful, unique mix of wildflowers that will offer a sense of natural wildflower beauty and locally adapted native plant authenticity in your landscape.

This mix has been a real favorite for sprucing up the color in areas such as:
Meadows
Open fields
Cabin sites
Next to walk-ways
Flower gardens
Window boxes
Hillsides and other sloped areas
Any area with partial to full sun and available moisture (rainfall or irrigation).

This wildflower mix contains no grasses and no fillers. We pride ourselves on our professional-grade wildflower seeds. Many of our customers may want to partner this mix with low-growing grass. In these circumstances, we recommend sheep fescue. Sheep fescue is a low-growing grass that establishes quickly, helping fill in gaps between wildflowers and creating a meadow-like look. Because it’s a short growing bunchgrass, it won’t hide the beauty of the wildflowers. Sheep fescue is a great compliment to this wildflower mix. We recommend buying about a half pound of sheep fescue for every 2000 sq ft (1 lb.) of wildflower mix. This amount may be increased or decreased depending on your desired ratio of wildflowers to grass.

A native grass option could be our blue wildrye, sand dropseed, Idaho fescue, purple three-awn, bottlebrush squirreltail, and blue grama.

What is Narrowleaf Milkweed?

Narrowleaf milkweed, scientifically known as Asclepias fascicularis, is a perennial herb with distinctive long pointed leaves. It is native from Southeast Washington and adjacent Idaho through California, Oregon, into Baja California, and west into Nevada. As a member of the milkweed species, narrowleaf milkweed plays a crucial role in supporting pollinators, particularly monarch butterflies.

Also called Mexican whorled milkweed, this plant serves as a host for monarch caterpillars, providing them with a vital food source and a place to lay their eggs. Like other milkweed species, it is a larval host plant to these pollinators.

Narrowleaf milkweed’s flowering season is the late spring or early summer and will last through fall. It is drought tolerant and prefers well-drained soils. Narrowleaf milkweed plants can grow up to 48 inches tall. Additionally, narrowleaf milkweed emits a delightful fragrance that adds to its overall appeal.

Why Grow Narrowleaf Milkweed?

There are numerous reasons why you should consider growing narrowleaf milkweed plants in your yard or garden. First and foremost, the stunning Mexican whorled milkweed plant adds beauty and fragrance to any outdoor space.

Additionally, narrow-leaf milkweed is crucial for supporting pollinators, particularly monarch caterpillars and butterflies. By growing milkweed plants, you provide a valuable food source and habitat for these beloved butterflies, allowing you to create your own personal butterfly garden and help pollinate plants in the area.

Moreover, narrowleaf milkweed is native to the United States, making native milkweeds an excellent choice for those who want to promote and preserve native plant species. Growing Mexican whorled milkweed is a rewarding and beneficial experience for you and the environment.

Planting and Maintenance Tips for a Thriving Garden

Once your narrow-leaf milkweed seeds are ready, it’s time to start planting! Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-drained soil. Plant the seeds at a depth of 1/8 to 1/4 inch and water regularly to keep the soil moist.

Be careful not to overwater the seeds, as Asclepias fascicularis prefers moderately fertile soil. Applying organic mulch can help the seeds retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases, and treat them if necessary.

Remember to trim any dead or damaged leaves and stems from your milkweed to encourage healthy growth. With these tips, your Mexican whorled milkweed garden will thrive!

The Role of Narrowleaf Milkweed Plants in the Ecosystem

Asclepias fascicularis plants play a vital role in the ecosystem, particularly when it comes to supporting beneficial insects, flowers, and other plants in North America. As a host to monarch butterflies and caterpillars, milkweed plants provide essential food and shelter.

The nectar-rich flowers attract a wide range of pollinators, including bees, contributing to your lawn’s overall health and biodiversity.

Additionally, milkweed plants can serve as companion plants, helping to deter pests. Incorporating milkweeds into your landscape creates a thriving environment that benefits plants and insects alike.
