White Clover

Birdsfoot Trefoil

Chicory

Key Benefits:

  • Climate-Smart Blend: Thrives in hot, humid summers and tolerates mild winter conditions common in the Deep South.

  • Year-Round Grazing: Warm-season grasses like Bermudagrass flourish in summer, while Fescue extends the grazing season into fall and winter.

  • Nutrient-Rich Forage: Legumes like White Clover add protein and improve soil nitrogen levels.

Benefits of Birdsfoot Trefoil:

  1. Non-Bloating Legume: Unlike many legumes, Birdsfoot Trefoil does not cause bloat, making it ideal for sheep grazing.

  2. High Nutritional Value: Rich in protein and digestible fiber, it supports optimal growth, reproduction, and wool quality in sheep.

  3. Summer Resilience: It tolerates moderate drought and heat, performing well in the Southern states’ warm summers.

  4. Tannin Content: Contains natural tannins that help reduce internal parasite loads in sheep, improve protein utilization, and reduce methane emissions.

  5. Nitrogen Fixation: As a legume, it enriches soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers.

Benefits of Chicory:

  1. Deep Taproot: Chicory’s strong root system accesses moisture and nutrients deep in the soil, improving drought resistance and pasture resilience.

  2. Highly Palatable and Nutritious: Chicory is eagerly grazed by sheep and provides a rich source of minerals (like calcium, zinc, and potassium) and digestible energy.

  3. Parasite Control: Chicory contains compounds (sesquiterpene lactones) that have natural anthelmintic properties — helping to suppress gastrointestinal parasites in sheep.

  4. Extended Grazing Season: It establishes quickly and remains productive through hot summer months when many cool-season grasses slow down.

  5. Improves Forage Diversity: Chicory boosts overall pasture productivity and helps balance the botanical composition, encouraging healthier grazing patterns.

Lobelia cardinalis, commonly known as cardinal flower, is a striking wildflower native to North America, particularly fond of wet habitats such as stream banks, marshes, and damp woodlands. It is renowned for its vibrant display of scarlet-red flowers. The cardinal flower stands tall, reaching heights of 2 to 4 feet, with lance-shaped leaves arranged along its erect stems. Its tubular blossoms, resembling the shape of a cardinal’s beak, bloom in dense spikes from midsummer to early fall, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies with their nectar-rich blooms. This perennial plant prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, though it can tolerate some sun in cooler climates. It is often used in rain gardens, bog gardens, and other water features, where its brilliant blooms add a pop of color to the landscape while providing habitat for pollinators.

This daisy will be consumed by livestock and will disappear from grazed areas due to its high palatability and protein content. It is a yellow flower with leaves that will fold under during hot times of the day. Engelmann’s daisy will flower from May through August. It is widely distributed across its native range in the southern Great Plains and can be found growing in grassland/uplands of many different soil types. Its deep taproot makes it a hardy, drought tolerant perennial that can grow to 2 feet in height. Fall or early spring, shallow, seeding provide good germination and caution should be taken to not plant deep.
