California Coastal Native Wildflower Mix https://naturesseed.com/product/california-costal-native-wildflower/ https://naturesseed.com/product/california-costal-native-wildflower/#respond Mon, 19 May 2025 03:10:15 +0000 https://naturesseed.com/product/0-5-lb/ Our California Coastal Native Wildflower seed mix is custom designed and native to the coastal areas of California (see distribution map). We thoughtfully selected wildflowers that are appropriate to this area and that provide a variety of bold and delicate blossoms; with both early and late blooming wildflowers for color through the growing season. This mix has been designed with an emphasis on native wildflowers and with special attention to balanced percentages of annuals and perennials.

The colors in bloom will vary at different times of the year, depending on how much water and sunlight are available to the wildflowers. The colors which you will see at different times of the year will include: blues, purples, pinks, reds, yellows, and oranges.

The actual composition of wildflowers will vary from season to season and from year to year, but generally you will receive the following wildflowers in each order of this mix:
Camissoniopsis cheiranthifolia: Beach evening primrose
Clarkia amoena semi-dwarf: Farewell-to-spring
Clarkia unguiculata: Mountain garland
Collinsia heterophylla: Chinese houses
Eschscholzia californica: California poppy
Gilia capitata: Globe gilia
Gilia tricolor: Birds eye
Lasthenia californica: Dwarf goldfields
Layia platyglossa: Tidy tips
Lupinus microcarpus Ed Gedling: Ed Gedling’s golden lupine
Lupinus nanus: Sky lupine
Lupinus succulentus: Arroyo lupine
Mimulus aurantiacus aurantiacus: Sticky monkeyflower
Nemophila menziesii: Baby blue eyes
Penstemon spectabilis: Showy penstemon
Sisyrinchium bellum: Blue eyed grass

This mix will make a great addition to any area of your landscape that you want to enhance the color with wildflowers that are not commonly found in typical store-bought seed mixes. Many of the seeds in this mix have been hand-harvested from the wild and, until now, have only been available to professional and commercial buyers. Now you can have a beautiful, unique mix of wildflowers that will offer a sense of natural wildflower beauty and locally adapted native plant authenticity in your landscape.

This mix has been a real favorite for sprucing up the color in areas such as:
Meadows
Open fields
Cabin sites
Next to walk-way
Flower gardens
Window boxes
Hillsides and other sloped areas
Any area with partial to full sun and available moisture (rainfall or irrigation).

This wildflower mix contains no grasses and no fillers. We pride ourselves on our professional-grade wildflower seeds. In these circumstances, we recommend our California Habitat Mix. Our California Habitat Mix is a low-growing grass mix that establishes quickly, helping fill in gaps between wildflowers and creating a meadow-like look. Because most of the varieties included in this mix are short-growing bunchgrasses, they won’t hide the beauty of the wildflowers. Our California Habitat Mix is a great complement to this wildflower mix. We recommend buying about a half pound of our California Habitat Mix for every 2000 ft² (1 lb.) of wildflower mix. This amount may be increased or decreased depending on your desired ratio of wildflowers to grass.

Designated as the official state flower in 1903, the California Poppy is cherished for its brilliant orange to golden-yellow petals, soft fern-like foliage, and its ability to thrive in dry, sun-soaked environments.

Native to California and the western United States, this hardy wildflower is a favorite in native gardens, roadside plantings, habitat restoration, and wildflower meadows, offering low-maintenance color and ecological value across a wide range of landscapes.

Key Benefits:
Vibrant, Low-Water Color
Famed for its glowing orange flowers that open in sunlight and close at dusk or on cloudy days.

Exceptionally drought-tolerant and well-suited for xeriscapes, slopes, and low-input landscapes.

Pollinator-Friendly
Attracts native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, supporting pollinator populations.

Blooms from early spring to summer, offering an early-season nectar source.

Native, Self-Sustaining Wildflower
Readily self-seeds in suitable conditions, creating long-lasting displays year after year.

Adapts to a variety of soils, especially sandy or rocky soils in full sun.

Cultural and Historical Significance
Celebrated every April 6th on California Poppy Day, with April 6–12 designated as Poppy Week.

Long admired for its medicinal and cultural uses, and today a symbol of California’s natural beauty and resilience.

Ideal For:
Native and pollinator gardens

Wildflower meadows and highway plantings

Restoration and erosion control projects

Drought-tolerant landscaping across the western U.S.

Planting California Poppy is a celebration of both natural heritage and sustainability. As the official flower of California, it brings brilliance to any landscape while supporting native ecosystems—and needs little more than sunlight and space to shine.
