Native to the central and eastern United States, smooth aster is a tall perennial known for its blue and purple daisy-like blooms set atop their sturdy stems with gray-green leaves. Smooth aster is very easy to grow and has moderate water requirements. It prefers well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade, but it can adapt to most soils. Can grow up to 48 inches and is greatly beneficial to honeybees and other pollinators, especially the pearl crescent butterfly. Once established, smooth aster is fairly drought tolerant and low maintenance.
