This daisy will be consumed by livestock and will disappear from grazed areas due to its high palatability and protein content. It is a yellow flower with leaves that will fold under during hot times of the day. Engelmann’s daisy will flower from May through August. It is widely distributed across its native range in the southern Great Plains and can be found growing in grassland/uplands of many different soil types. Its deep taproot makes it a hardy, drought tolerant perennial that can grow to 2 feet in height. Fall or early spring, shallow, seeding provide good germination and caution should be taken to not plant deep.

Chickling Vetch https://naturesseed.com/pasture-seed/individual-pasture-species/chickling-vetch/ https://naturesseed.com/pasture-seed/individual-pasture-species/chickling-vetch/#respond Tue, 13 Aug 2024 22:32:05 +0000 https://dev8.etecc.com/natures_seed.bak/?post_type=product&p=355765

Lathyrus sativus, commonly known as chickling vetch, emerges as a versatile and valuable cool-season annual legume, prized for its dual benefits as a nitrogen source and forage crop. Whether planted in early spring or late summer, it serves as a reliable option for enhancing soil fertility and providing nutritious forage for livestock. With its high palatability, chickling vetch is suitable for both pasture and hay production, offering flexibility in agricultural management. It can be harvested for hay or grazed approximately 60 days after planting, allowing for rapid utilization and maximum yield potential. In addition to its role as a forage crop, chickling vetch exhibits impressive nitrogen-fixing capabilities, enriching the soil and supporting subsequent crops in rotation. Chickling vetch is often included in mixed plantings with oats, peas, radishes, and other cool-season annual forages, enhancing diversity and productivity in cropping systems.

Flowering Meadow Mix https://naturesseed.com/wildflower-seed/regional-wildflower-mixes/flowering-meadow-mix/ https://naturesseed.com/wildflower-seed/regional-wildflower-mixes/flowering-meadow-mix/#respond Thu, 16 Feb 2023 09:50:38 +0000 https://dev8.etecc.com/natures_seed.bak/product/flowering-meadow-mix/

Our Flowering Meadow seed mix is native and well adapted to coastal through inland conditions below 2,500 elevation in California (see distribution map). We thoughtfully selected wildflowers that are appropriate to this area and that provide a variety of bold and delicate blossoms; with early blooming wildflowers for color throughout spring and summer. This mix has been designed with an emphasis on native wildflowers and with special attention to balanced percentages of annuals and perennials. In the late summer, once seed has set, mow the area to scatter ripe seed for the following year’s growth. In the fall, additional seeding may be desired to establish a stronger, self-supporting stand.

The colors in bloom will vary at different times of the year, and depending on how much water and sunlight are available to the wildflowers. The colors which you will see at different times of the year will include: blues, purples, pinks, reds, yellows, and oranges.

The actual composition of wildflowers will vary from season to season and from year to year, but generally you will receive the following wildflowers in each order of this mix:
Achillea millefolium: White yarrow
Clarkia amoena: Farewell to spring
Coreopsis lanceolata: Lance-leaf coreopsis
Eschscholzia californica: California poppy
Festuca idahoensis: Idaho fescue
Festuca microstachys: Small fescue
Hordeum brachyantherum: California barley
Lasthenia californica: Dwarf goldfields
Layia platyglossa: Tidy tips
Linum lewisii: Blue flax
Lupinus nanus: Sky lupine
Lupinus succulentus: Arroyo lupine
Melica californica: California melic

This mix will make a great addition to any area of your landscape that you want to enhance the color with wildflowers that are not commonly found in typical store-bought seed mixes. Many of the seeds in this mix have been hand-harvested from the wild and, until now, have only been available to professional and commercial buyers. Now you can have a beautiful, unique mix of wildflowers that will offer a sense of natural wildflower beauty and locally adapted native plant authenticity in your landscape.

Our Insecta-Flora seed contains legumes and brilliant wildflowers to create a natural insectary that attracts and supports the beneficial predatory insects while providing an alternate target for crop destroyers, drawing them into an insect ambush. This mix is typically used in ecological restoration projects, landscaping, or gardening efforts aimed at creating habitats that benefit both insects and plants. We thoughtfully selected wildflowers that provide a variety of bold and delicate blossoms; with both early and late blooming wildflowers for color through the growing season. This mix has been designed with special attention to balanced percentages of annuals and perennials.

The colors in bloom will vary at different times of the year, and depending on how much water and sunlight are available to the wildflowers. The colors which you will see at different times of the year will include: blues, purples, pinks, reds, yellows, and oranges.

Now you can have a beautiful, unique mix of wildflowers that will offer a sense of natural wildflower beauty and locally adapted native plant authenticity in your landscape.

This mix has been a real favorite for sprucing up the color in areas such as:
Meadows
Open fields
Cabin sites
Next to walk-ways
Flower gardens
Window boxes
Hillsides and other sloped areas
Any area with partial to full sun and available moisture (rainfall or irrigation).

This wildflower mix contains no grasses and no fillers. We pride ourselves on our professional-grade wildflower seeds. Many of our customers may want to partner this mix with low-growing grass. In these circumstances, we recommend sheep fescue. Sheep fescue is a low-growing grass that establishes quickly, helping fill in gaps between wildflowers and creating a meadow-like look. Because it’s a short growing bunchgrass, it won’t hide the beauty of the wildflowers. Sheep fescue is a great compliment to this wildflower mix. We recommend buying about a half pound of sheep fescue for every 2000 sq ft (1 lb.) of wildflower mix. This amount may be increased or decreased depending on your desired ratio of wildflowers to grass.

A native grass option could be our blue wildrye, sand dropseed, Idaho fescue, purple three-awn, bottlebrush squirreltail, and blue grama.
