Our Tortoise Forage mix was inspired by customer David Sewart. This mix includes a wide variety of grasses palatable and nutritious for tortoises. A combination of warm-season and cool-season grasses, this mix is designed to thrive in most areas of the U.S. where tortoises enjoy basking in the sunlight and grazing on grass. All species in this mix are endophyte-free and safe for tortoises. This mix produces a pasture that will contain approximately:

10% Buffalograss

10% Big Bluestem

10% Western Wheatgrass

10% Tall Fescue (endophyte free)

10% Bermudagrass

10% Orchardgrass

10% Little Bluestem

10% Blue Grama

10% Sheep Fescue

Note that due to legal restrictions, Bermudagrass cannot be shipped to Utah with the exception of Washington County. Those shipping this mix to Utah will need to select the “No Bermudagrass” option.

Although these seeds are all fescues, they have unique characteristics that work well together and create an immaculate fine fescue lawn. Let’s break down the ins and outs of how each of these fescues can help you create a full and beautiful cool-season lawn:

• Hard Fescue grass seed is slow-growing and highly tolerant. In fact, the Hard Fescue performance is why it’s a natural favorite: It grows well in shaded areas and poor soil, making it a great addition to any lawn — especially those with bare spots.
• Sheep Fescue grows in bunches. As a crawling grass, Sheep Fescue quickly covers large spaces and helps your lawn look perfectly green. It also has a dense root system, making it an excellent species for soil erosion control.
• Chewings Fescue grass seed differs from the other fescues in this seed blend because it’s the only one that doesn’t crawl. Chewings Fescue is also a little more sensitive to foot traffic, but it offers softer grass and resiliency to grow on sandy soil!
